Scalp massage benefits What the pressure is doing.

30 minutes of steady pressure across the scalp, the base of the skull and the tops of the shoulders — against the 90 seconds a salon shampoo bowl can spare, and slow enough that a good number of guests fall asleep in it.

Quick answer

A scalp massage is steady hands-on pressure worked across the scalp, the temples and the ridge at the base of the skull, usually 10 to 30 minutes of it, to ease muscle tension in the head and neck. At Aura Beauty & Head Spa in Issaquah, WA, the way to book one on its own is the TCM Head Aromatherapy, 30 minutes for $50, which never wets your hair. Inside a full head spa the massage runs longer and the price starts at $78 for 45 minutes. Open every day, 9 AM to 8 PM.

What does a scalp massage do? Under the skin.

A head spa bed and basin at Aura in Issaquah behind a curtain divider, with water-light patterns moving across the ceiling

It works a thin sheet of muscle that most people never think about. The scalp sits on the occipitofrontalis, which runs from the eyebrows over the crown to the base of the skull and is joined across the top by a wide band of tendon. Slow repeated pressure lets that sheet soften, the way the top of a shoulder does under a thumb.

Where the tension collects

Three places, and they are the same three on almost everyone who spends the day at a keyboard. The temples, where the jaw muscle climbs the side of the head and tightens every time you clench. The ridge at the back of the skull, where the neck muscles attach. The tops of the shoulders, which have been holding a phone.

A 30-minute session spends most of its time on those three and returns to each of them several times. Repetition is what separates it from a quick rub: the fourth pass over the base of the skull feels different from the first, and by then it is easy to lose track of the time.

What the research supports

Relaxation, mostly. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health groups massage among the approaches studied for stress and muscle tension and reports that serious side effects are rare. Mayo Clinic files hands-on work with breathing and meditation as relaxation techniques, the kind of practice that can slow the heart rate and ease muscle tightness.

None of that is medical. A scalp massage is a beauty and relaxation service, and it does not diagnose, treat or cure anything — a distinction that matters most if your scalp has started doing something new. For the wider treatment it sits inside, the head spa guide covers all six stages.

How long should a scalp massage be?

About 30 minutes, when the massage is the whole appointment. That is the shortest slot on our menu and the only one that is scalp work from start to finish: the TCM Head Aromatherapy, 30 minutes at $50, is scalp oil, steady pressure and aroma, with no shampoo and no water anywhere near your hair.

Past half an hour the massage stops being the whole appointment and becomes the longest part of one. The 60-minute Signature Head Spa at $90 cleanses and exfoliates the scalp as well, and stretches the hands-on work out through the neck and the upper shoulders. All eight formats are listed on the head spa page.

How often to come back

Every 4 to 6 weeks suits most people, which is the same maintenance interval a full head spa settles into. Book closer together for a stretch if a run of desk weeks has your neck and jaw locked up, then let it spread out again once things settle.

The appointment itself is the fixed part: 30 or 60 minutes lying down, a fireplace going in the lounge, tea on arrival and nothing waiting on you at the other end. The 30-minute session fits a lunch break; the 60-minute one is the better booking for the end of a day, since the door stays open until 8 PM.

How is a head massage at a spa different from a salon wash? 90 seconds against 30 minutes.

Firm pressure applied along the top of the shoulder and into the base of the neck during a massage

Time, and where the hands go. A shampoo-bowl rub at a salon runs about 90 seconds and exists to move product through your hair before the cut. At a head massage spa the massage is the appointment, so the therapist stays on the scalp, the base of the skull and the shoulders for the whole booked slot.

The second difference is that somebody looked first. Every head spa here opens with a digital scalp analysis, and what shows up on the monitor settles whether the session should work oil into a tight scalp or lift buildup off an oily one. A salon chair has no equivalent.

WhereHands-on timePrice
Salon shampoo bowlAbout 90 seconds, before the cutPart of the wash
TCM Head Aromatherapy, 30 minutesClose to the full slot, on a dry scalp$50

Signature Head Spa, 60 minutesAdds exfoliation and a longer neck stretch$90
Neck & Shoulder Massage, 30 minutesShoulders and upper back, no scalp work$60

That last row is a different service on a different table, and it is the better booking when the ache sits below the collar. Both it and the 60-minute Swedish at $85 are on the massage page.

Which scalp massage should you book?

A digital scalp camera resting beside a monitor that shows hair follicles magnified many times over

The 30-minute TCM Head Aromatherapy at $50 if you want the scalp massage by itself, and the 60-minute Signature Head Spa at $90 if you want it wrapped in a cleanse. The first leaves your hair dry the whole way through. The second finishes with a blow-dry, so you can go somewhere afterwards.

How the 30-minute session runs

  1. The scalp camera goes on first, and what it shows on the monitor chooses the oil. You keep your clothes on — nothing gets washed, so there is no gown and no wet towel around your neck.
  2. Oil goes on in sections and the pressure starts light at the hairline, then works back over the crown and down to the ridge at the base of the skull.
  3. The last stretch moves into the neck and the tops of the shoulders, and you sit up with dry hair 30 minutes after you lay down.

Come with your hair as it is — a scalp washed an hour ago reads differently under the camera, and the cleansing is our job on the longer formats anyway. Say early if you want less pressure. Firm is a range, and the therapist will work inside whatever part of it suits you.

Pairing it with something else

Six of the seven packages put a scalp session next to a facial or a body massage, and each costs less than its two halves booked apart. The Male upper-shoulder-and-head-spa package is $120 for 60 minutes, 30 minutes of shoulder work then 30 minutes of head spa. Neck & Shoulder Massage with a full 60-minute head spa is $140 across 90 minutes, and the Midweek Healing Package runs three 30-minute stages for $148.

Every price is published on the pricing page with nothing held back for the consultation, and the rest of the combinations are on the packages page. Booking runs through Square, seven days a week between 9 AM and 8 PM, from the booking page.

Can you give yourself a scalp massage at home?

Yes, and five minutes with your fingertips in the shower is worth the habit. Work small circles from the hairline back over the crown, then hook your thumbs under the ridge at the base of the skull where the neck attaches and hold for a slow count of ten. The silicone scalp brushes sold for this do roughly what fingers already do.

What the 30 minutes on the bed adds is reach, duration and a second pair of hands. Holding your own arms above your head for half an hour is not restful, the back of your own skull is awkward to get at, and nobody relaxes while doing the work. Keep the shower habit between visits and book a proper scalp massage for the part you cannot do yourself.

— 06

Does scalp massage make hair grow?

No. Scalp massage eases muscle tension and it feels good, and neither of those is a hair-growth treatment. Thinning hair, a receding line, or hair coming out in patches belongs with a dermatologist, who has options a beauty studio does not. See one first, then book the massage for what it does do — the two sit together perfectly well.

What the scalp camera can and cannot tell you

It shows buildup at the follicle, how dry the skin looks between the hairs and how much oil is sitting on the surface. You see your own scalp at many times life size on the monitor, which startles most people the first time. What it does not do is identify a condition, and nobody here will put a name to one. The scalp analysis guide walks through what is on the screen.

When should you see a doctor first?

The fireplace lounge at Aura in Issaquah, with lit candles and rolled towels waiting on a cart

Before booking, if any of this is going on: hair coming out in patches, a scalp that is sore, bleeding or crusting, flaking that has not settled with an over-the-counter shampoo, or a sudden change you cannot account for. All of those belong with a dermatologist — see one first, then book, because a head spa is a beauty service and does not diagnose or treat any of them.

Headaches are the other thing people ask about at the desk. Frequent or worsening ones belong with a doctor, and Mayo Clinic describes tension-type headache as a band of pressure around the head with tenderness through the scalp, neck and shoulder muscles. Get it looked at properly, and the massage is still there for the tension part.

— Questions

Asked & answered.

Is a scalp massage the same thing as a head spa?

A head spa is the full treatment — scalp analysis, double cleanse, massage, warm-water rinse, mask and blow-dry — and the massage is its longest stage. To book the massage on its own, the 30-minute TCM Head Aromatherapy at $50 is the one, because it skips the wash entirely.

How much does a scalp massage cost in Issaquah?

$50 for 30 minutes as a standalone session at Aura. Inside a head spa it runs from $78 for the 45-minute Classic up to $150 for the 90-minute formats, and the full list is on the pricing page.

Will my hair be wet when I leave?

Not after the 30-minute aromatherapy session — it never wets your hair in the first place. Every format from 45 minutes up finishes with a blow-dry, so you walk out dry either way.

How firm is the pressure?

Firm enough to move the scalp against the skull, and adjustable. Tell your therapist in the first couple of minutes if you want it lighter; it is much easier to change early than to sit through 30 minutes hoping it eases off.

Can a scalp massage help with stress?

It may help you relax, and that is the reason most people book it. NCCIH lists massage among the approaches studied for stress, and Mayo Clinic groups it with breathing and meditation as a relaxation technique. It is not a treatment for an anxiety disorder.

Does scalp massage regrow hair?

No. Scalp massage eases muscle tension; it does nothing for a hairline. If hair loss is what brought you here, see a dermatologist first, then book the session for the tension and the quiet half hour.

How do I find the studio on E Sunset Way?

Come off I-90 at Exit 18 and look for the dark monument sign at the curb reading House of Layo and Aura Beauty. The studio is a converted house on a tree-lined block in Olde Town, about a third of a mile east of Front Street, which is a 7 to 9 minute walk on the flat.
