Hair washing service What a professional wash includes.

Two shampoos, a look at the scalp under magnification, a long scalp massage, a rinse under warm running water, a conditioning treatment and a blow-dry. A wash at home is one shampoo and a rinse most people cut short. The 45-minute Classic Head Spa at $78 is the shortest session on our menu that runs the whole sequence.

The second shampoo

The first shampoo lifts what is sitting on the hair — styling product, sunscreen, whatever a week of commuting deposits. It foams badly and does little for skin. The second goes onto a cleaner surface and gets down between the follicles, where oil and old conditioner collect.

Someone else's hands

You cannot reach the back of your own head with any pressure worth having, and nobody scrubs their own crown for as long as it wants. A therapist works in slow circles from the hairline to the nape, across the whole scalp, and keeps going long after your own arms would have quit.

The reclined rinse

You stay lying down while the water falls through your hair from the ring mounted over the basin, so nothing is sprayed at your face and your neck stays supported. The rinse runs far longer than anyone bothers with at home: leftover shampoo is what makes clean hair feel coated by mid-afternoon.

The blow-dry

Every format from 45 minutes up finishes dry. The 30-minute TCM Head Aromatherapy at $50 is the one exception, because the hair never gets wet — oil, pressure and aroma worked into a dry scalp, made for a lunch break. Your scalp, magnified on a screen you can watch from the chair, before anyone opens a bottle. A camera is held against the parting and the picture lands on the monitor beside it, so you see the skin between the follicles at a size no bathroom mirror gives you. Two scalps that look identical from a foot away can want opposite products. One is oily between the follicles and needs a clarifying cleanse; the other is flaking along the part line and needs everything softened. Hair type alone does not tell you which is which, so the camera comes before the products.

What the camera does not do

It gives no diagnosis. The images show oil, flaking, product buildup and how densely hair sits at the crown, and nobody here reads them as though they said more. The scalp analysis guide goes through what the pictures cover and where they stop.

When the scalp is the reason you are booking. Buildup you can feel with a fingertip, a week of dry shampoo before a trip, a shoulder that will not lift above your head, or the plain wish for 45 minutes where nobody can reach you.

Buildup, oil and a flat crown

A shoulder, a wrist, a cast

When to see a dermatologist first

Book a doctor before you book us if hair is coming out in patches, if the scalp is sore, bleeding or crusting, or if flaking has not settled after a few weeks of an over-the-counter shampoo.
