Head spa, if you want the obvious one

Facials, massage, or two things at once
Four facials from $80, and massage from $60 for neck and shoulders to $135 for 90 minutes of deep tissue. The seven packages pair a head spa with shoulder work or a facial in one booking, each one cheaper than its stages booked separately.

What does the visit look like when they use it?
Six stages, and they spend most of it lying back with their head in a shallow basin. It opens with a scalp analysis: a handheld camera magnifies one patch onto a monitor, and they see it at the same moment the therapist does. What comes next is chosen from what the camera showed.
Then two shampoos: the first lifts product and sunscreen, the second is the one that reaches skin. After that comes the long part — slow pressure across the scalp, the neck and the tops of the shoulders, about twenty minutes of it on the 60 minute Signature at $90. A fair number of people fall asleep in there.
Warm water follows from the ring above the basin while they stay lying down, then a mask matched to what the camera showed. Every format from 45 minutes up ends with a blow-dry, which counts for something in a town that takes 62 inches of rain a year.
One thing worth knowing before you buy
Hair coming out, a sore scalp, or flaking that has not settled with over-the-counter treatment is a dermatologist's question. See one first, then book — the two work well together. Open every day, 9 AM to 8 PM — a lunch hour, an evening after work, or a weekend morning all fit.
- Come off I-90 at Exit 18 and follow E Sunset Way east. We are about a third of a mile past Front Street, on a block of converted houses.
- Watch the curb for a dark monument sign reading House of Layo and Aura Beauty. We share the site with the salon, so that sign is the landmark.
- Come a few minutes early on a first visit — there is tea by the fireplace, and a head spa starts with a look at your scalp on the monitor.
